Better Sleep with Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Sleep is one of the most important foundations of good health.

While we sleep, the body and brain carry out essential processes involved in recovery, tissue repair, memory, immune function, hormone regulation and cellular maintenance.

Yet many people struggle with poor sleep quality.  Difficulty falling asleep, waking frequently during the night, early waking, and waking feeling unrefreshed can all affect energy, mood, concentration, physical performance, and long-term health.

Increasingly, research is exploring whether Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) can assist with better sleep.  There are several physiological reasons why improved oxygen availability, reduced inflammation and enhanced brain and cellular function may positively influence sleep.

The connection between oxygen and sleep

The brain is one of the body's most metabolically active organs and requires a constant supply of oxygen to function properly.

During Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, increased atmospheric pressure allows more oxygen to dissolve into the plasma.  This oxygen-rich plasma can travel throughout the body and reach tissues where oxygen delivery may be limited.

Increased oxygen availability supports important processes involved in:

  • Brain metabolism

  • Cellular energy production

  • Tissue repair

  • Circulation

  • Inflammation regulation

  • Nervous system recovery

Sleep is regulated by a complex interaction between the brain, nervous system, hormones, and metabolism.  Supporting these systems therefore has a positive influence on sleep quality.

HBOT and cellular energy

One connection between HBOT and better sleep involves mitochondrial function.

Mitochondria are often referred to as the energy-producing structures within our cells.  They use oxygen to help produce ATP, the energy required for cellular function.

The brain has particularly high energy demands.

When the body is under physiological stress, recovering from illness or injury, or experiencing chronic inflammation, cellular energy production is affected.

By increasing oxygen availability, HBOT supports cellular metabolism and mitochondrial function.  This may be particularly relevant for people experiencing fatigue, neurological stress, or conditions associated with impaired oxygen utilisation.

The brain and nervous system under metabolic stress may struggle to maintain optimal regulation between wakefulness and restorative sleep.  Supporting oxygen delivery and cellular energy production helps create more favourable conditions for recovery.

Inflammation and sleep quality

Sleep and inflammation have a close relationship.

Poor sleep can increase inflammatory activity in the body, while inflammation can also disrupt sleep patterns.

Inflammatory signalling molecules, including cytokines, can influence the brain and nervous system.  They affect fatigue, pain, mood, and sleep regulation.

HBOT has been studied for its effects on inflammation, oxidative stress and tissue healing.  By improving tissue oxygenation and influencing inflammatory pathways, HBOT indirectly supports better sleep in people where pain, inflammation or chronic physiological stress is contributing to sleep disruption.

Supporting the nervous system

Quality sleep requires the nervous system to move from a state of alertness into a state of rest and recovery.

However, many people with disrupted sleep experience what is known as physiological hyperarousal.  In simple terms, the brain and nervous system remain too alert when the body should be preparing for sleep.  This may be influenced by stress, chronic pain, neurological injury, illness or ongoing inflammation.

HBOT is increasingly being studied for its effects on neurological recovery, cerebral blood flow and neuroplasticity.  By supporting oxygen availability and brain metabolism, HBOT helps support nervous system recovery and regulation.  This contributes to:

  • Falling asleep more easily

  • Fewer disturbances during the night

  • Improved sleep quality

  • Feeling more refreshed on waking

International research

International research has investigated changes in sleep quality in people receiving HBOT for different health conditions.

Studies have reported improvements in areas including:

  • Subjective sleep quality

  • Sleep latency, or the time it takes to fall asleep

  • Sleep disturbances

  • Overall sleep quality

Some research has suggested that the greatest improvements may occur in people who have poorer sleep at the beginning of treatment.  While further controlled studies are needed, these findings suggest that HBOT may influence sleep physiology and nervous system recovery.

HBOT and neurological health

Sleep disruption is common in people experiencing neurological conditions.

Changes in brain metabolism, inflammation, circulation and nervous system regulation can all affect normal sleep patterns.

Research investigating HBOT in neurological populations has reported improvements in several sleep-related outcomes, including:

  • Sleep efficiency

  • Total sleep time

  • Slow-wave sleep

  • REM sleep

  • Time taken to fall asleep

  • Frequency of waking

Although findings from specific neurological conditions cannot automatically be applied to everyone, they provide further insight into the possible relationship between HBOT, brain physiology and sleep.

Could better sleep be an indirect benefit of HBOT?

For many people, better sleep is not the primary reason they begin Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy.  They may initially be seeking support for:

  • Recovery from injury

  • Physical performance

  • Fatigue

  • Neurological symptoms

  • Chronic health conditions

  • General wellbeing

However, many people report improvements in sleep alongside improvements in other aspects of their health and recovery.  This is related to the combined effects of HBOT on:

  • Oxygen availability

  • Brain metabolism

  • Cellular energy production

  • Inflammation

  • Pain 

  • Fatigue

  • Neurological recovery

  • Nervous system regulation

HBOT is not a sleeping pill

One of the interesting differences between HBOT and traditional sleep medication is that HBOT is not designed to sedate the brain.  Instead, the benefits come from supporting the underlying physiology involved in recovery and healthy sleep.

Improved oxygen availability, cellular energy production and reduced physiological stress helps create an environment in which the body is better able to regulate normal sleep patterns.  For many people, this means deeper, more restorative sleep.  For others, HBOT may have little or no noticeable effect on sleep.

The future of HBOT and sleep

Research into Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and sleep is still developing, but the findings so far are encouraging.  Studies have demonstrated improvements in sleep quality and insomnia symptoms in certain populations.

At the same time, research continues to explore the relationship between oxygen, brain function, inflammation, metabolism and sleep.
